Essential Oil Skincare for Kids & Pre-Teens: 4 Gentle DIY Recipes + Safety Guide

Essential Oil Skincare for Kids & Pre-Teens: 4 Gentle DIY Recipes + Safety Guide

The short version: DIY essential oil skincare for kids and pre-teens can be simple, gentle, and fun when made with properly diluted ingredients. Below: 5 family-tested DIYs, a safety cheat sheet, and the recipe that started it all.

"Mom. I want one with bubbles."

That's how this whole project started.

We've been a wellness-focused household for a while, but recently our son decided he was ready for his own face wash β€” and he had opinions. Specifically: it had to foam. 🫧

Instead of grabbing a heavily-scented kids product off the shelf, we made a gentle foaming face wash togetherΒ  β€” naturally-derived ingredients, a few skincare staples we already use in our own routines, and zero stress. It turned into one of those special moments we'll remember.

It also opened the door to a question we hear all the time at Vinyl&Oil: can kids and pre-teens actually use essential oil skincare?

The short answer is yes β€” thoughtfully. The longer answer is what this whole post is about.

Why Essential Oil Skincare Can Work for Kids and Pre-Teens

Younger skin is different from adult skin: thinner, more permeable, more sensitive to fragrance and synthetics. Which is exactly why heavily-scented commercial kids products can be overkill β€” too much fragrance, too many fillers, packaged in too much plastic.

Naturally-derived skincare made with properly-diluted essential oils tends to be:

  • ✨ Gentler on sensitive young skin β€” fewer synthetic fragrances and dyes
  • 🌿 More customizable β€” you control every ingredient
  • πŸ’› A great way to introduce gentle skincare habits early β€” without making it feel like a chore
  • 🎁 A fun, hands-on experience β€” kids love being part of the making

The catch: kids' skin is more sensitive than adult skin, which means essential oils have to be diluted more carefully, and not every oil is safe for every age.

Safety First: Age-Appropriate Essential Oils

Before any DIY, two non-negotiables:

  1. Always patch-test on a small spot of skin (inner forearm) and wait 24 hours before full use.
  2. Always dilute β€” essential oils should never go directly on a child's skin undiluted.

Below is a quick reference for some of the most popular essential oils for skincare and which age ranges they're generally considered safer for. (Sources: National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, Tisserand Institute. We're not doctors β€” when in doubt, ask your pediatrician.)

Age-Safe Essential Oils Cheat Sheet

Generally considered safe (diluted) for ages 2 and up:

  • Lavender β€” calming, gentle, the workhorse of kids' skincare
  • Roman Chamomile β€” soothing, beautiful for sensitive skin
  • Mandarin β€” bright, sweet, kid-friendly

Generally considered safe (diluted) for ages 6 and up:

  • Tea Tree β€” cleansing, useful for older kids and pre-teen breakouts
  • Frankincense β€” gentle and lovely for skin
  • Geranium β€” balancing, especially nice for pre-teen hormonal skin
  • Bergamot β€” bright citrus (use phototoxic-free or "FCF" version)

Wait until pre-teen years (10+) or older:

  • Peppermint
  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary

Dilution Cheat Sheet

A safe starting point for skincare DIYs:

Age Dilution Drops per 1 teaspoon (5ml) carrier
2-6 0.25-0.5% 1-2 drops
6-12 0.5-1% 2-3 drops
12+ (pre-teen / adult) 1-2% 5-10 drops

The carrier oil does the heavy lifting. Our favorites: jojoba, rosehip, sweet almond, and fractionated coconut.

4 Gentle DIY Recipes for Kids & Pre-Teens

1. The Gentle Foaming Face Wash (the one with the bubbles)

The recipe that started it all. Safe for ages 6 and up; for kids 2-5, drop the tea tree oil and use 4 drops of lavender total.

You'll need:

  • 2 tablespoons unscented castile soap
  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • 1 teaspoon rosehip oil
  • 3 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops Tea Tree essential oil
  • Filtered water
  • A foaming soap dispenser

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a foaming soap dispenser.
  2. Fill the remaining space with filtered water.
  3. Gently shake to combine.
  4. Pump into hands and wash face normally.

That's it β€” simple, quick, and fun to make together. We use Kate Blanc Organic Rosehip Oil for the carrier β€” it's lightweight, nourishing, and one of our favorite multi-use skincare oils. Grab some here.Β

2. Calming Lavender Body Spray (great for bedtime, ages 2+)

A bedtime spritz that smells like a hug. Safe for toddlers and up.

You'll need:

  • 4 oz glass spray bottle
  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel
  • 8-10 drops lavender essential oil
  • Filtered water

Instructions:

  1. Add witch hazel to spray bottle.
  2. Add lavender oil.
  3. Top with filtered water.
  4. Shake before each use. Spritz onto pajamas or pillow.

Perfect bedtime ritual: mist the pillow β†’ read one book β†’ lights out.

3. Pre-Teen "Clean Skin" Roller Bottle (ages 10+)

For pre-teens whose skin is starting to change. Gentle, cleansing, and feels like theirs.

You'll need:

  • 10ml roller bottle
  • 2 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop frankincense essential oil
  • Jojoba oil (carrier)

Instructions:

  1. Add essential oils to the roller bottle.
  2. Top with jojoba oil.
  3. Cap and shake gently.
  4. Roll onto cleansed skin, focusing on breakout-prone areas. Once daily to start.

A little goes a long way β€” and it makes them feel grown-up without crossing into "this looks like an adult product."

4.Β Calming Bath Salts for the End of a Long School Day (ages 2+)

A small ritual that signals "the day is over."

You'll need:

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 2 tablespoons dried lavender flowers (optional but pretty)
  • 6 drops lavender essential oil
  • Glass jar

Instructions:

  1. Mix salt and lavender flowers in a bowl.
  2. Drizzle in lavender oil, stir gently.
  3. Store in a glass jar.
  4. Use 2-3 tablespoons per bath.

Why the Hands-On Part Matters

Apparently, the bubbles were non-negotiable. But the real magic wasn't the foam β€” it was the making it together.

Wellness habits stick when they feel playful and personal. Instead of skincare feeling complicated or "grown-up," our son's foaming face wash became:

  • ✨ A fun activity
  • πŸ’› A confidence boost
  • 🫧 A hands-on learning moment
  • 🌿 A way to introduce simple wellness rituals early

And now he proudly calls it his face wash.

FAQ: Essential Oil Skincare for Kids & Pre-Teens

Are essential oils safe for kids' skin? Yes, when properly diluted and age-appropriate. Generally, lavender and Roman chamomile are considered safe for skin use from age 2 with proper dilution (0.25-0.5%). Tea tree and frankincense are typically reserved for ages 6 and up. Always patch test before full use, and avoid peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary on children under 10.

At what age can kids start using essential oil skincare? Most aromatherapy sources consider age 2 the safe starting point for topical use, with very gentle dilution (0.25-0.5%). Lavender is the most commonly used kid-safe option. For pre-teens (10+), dilution can increase to 1% and the range of safer oils expands to include tea tree, frankincense, and geranium.

How do you dilute essential oils for children's skin? A general guideline: 0.25-0.5% dilution for ages 2-6 (about 1-2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil), 0.5-1% for ages 6-12 (2-3 drops per teaspoon), and 1-2% for pre-teens 12+ (5-10 drops per teaspoon). Always use a quality carrier oil like jojoba, rosehip, or sweet almond.

Is tea tree oil safe for kids? Tea tree oil is generally considered safe for topical use in children ages 6 and up, when properly diluted to 0.5-1%. It can be helpful for pre-teen breakouts. For younger children, lavender is a gentler alternative.

Can kids use rosehip oil on their skin? Yes. Rosehip oil is generally considered a gentle carrier oil and is often used in DIY skincare for kids and pre-teens because it’s lightweight, nourishing, and rich in fatty acids. Always patch test first and choose a high-quality, organic oil such as Kate Blanc Cosmetics.

What's the best DIY face wash for kids? A simple gentle foaming face wash using unscented castile soap, a nourishing carrier oil (rosehip or jojoba), Vitamin E oil, and 3-5 drops of kid-safe essential oils (lavender for younger, lavender + tea tree for older) in a foaming dispenser. The recipe is at the top of this post.

Can pre-teens use essential oils for acne? Diluted tea tree, lavender, and frankincense are commonly used for pre-teen skin care. A 1% dilution roller bottle (recipe #3 above) is a gentle starting point. For persistent or severe acne, always consult a pediatric dermatologist.
